Dental hygiene is an important aspect of overall health. Studies suggest links between oral diseases and systemic infection, diabetes, and a number of other health issues. But with all of the options available, who knows what works?

Tongue scrapers, flossing sticks, an assortment of toothpastes and mouthwashes: the choices can be overwhelming. Shouldn't caring for your teeth be simple? The truth is: it is simple. Brushing, flossing, and gargling will take less than five minutes at a time, and help keep your teeth their healthiest.

Brushing Your Teeth

Proper tooth care begins at home, and the easiest, most effective way to combat oral health issues is by brushing your teeth twice daily. When you brush your teeth remember to:

• Use fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride helps strengthen teeth and combats decay.
• Use a soft-bristled toothbrush. Soft bristles will protect your tooth enamel.
• Brush for at least two minutes at a time. Morning and night, make sure you brush your teeth for a sufficient time to remove all plaque and bacteria.

Flossing Your Teeth

Flossing your teeth is just as important as brushing. Flossing helps remove food and plaque that can build up in hard to reach places that your toothbrush cannot clean. When you floss remember to:

• Use enough floss (12 to 18 inches) to secure a tight grip on either end
• Floss between every tooth, including hard to reach back teeth

Mouthwash

Rinsing with a mouthwash after brushing and flossing can help eliminate bad breath and adds an additional level of cleaning. When choosing a mouthwash check for:

• Antiseptic properties to help kill bacteria
• Tartar control to help minimize the buildup of sticky, hard to remove plaque

Regular Dental Checkups and Cleanings

Of course, no amount of in-home cleaning is a suitable substitute for semi-annual dental cleanings and checkups. During these checkups your dentist can detect and treat a number of oral health concerns including gum disease, oral cancers, and tooth decay. Not to mention the thorough cleaning that only a dentist can provide will leave your teeth whiter, more brilliant, and healthier than an at-home only routine.
